I don't know if anyone has posted this here before, this is Area 51's OH-58D for FSX. The best visual model I have seen. The flight model is pretty decent too. There are paint jobs for Charle Co. 3/17, Rucker, 101, 25th Attack, and more.

Those uniforms are not authorized. I am forwarding this to the appropriate Sergeants Major.

That is some great modeling! I am learning how to do 3D models for work... My first rotor system rotated in the wrong plane, That's bad for the crew, btw

Nice to see the Outcast symbol has made it to a video game.

The aircraft is payware for Microsoft Flight Simulator X. It is just eye candy though, no bells for whistles. Flies like the default helos. I did notice it is a little light on power, funny how things like that work out.:tongue:For those of you not into FSX, it is a great tool for instrument work and flying in different conditions as long as you have good aftermarket aircraft with accurate modeling of systems and flight characteristics. I spend a lot of money building a top of the line machine just to run this program with 3d graphics and head motion tracking system to give me the feel of flying. The only thing missing for me is that in the seat of your pants feeling. I fly Cessna 172/182 and have practiced many procedural approaches on this the day or even morning of planned flights and it's as though I have already done them by the time I do it in the plane. I will keep you on your toes. Be forewarned though, it is a poorly written piece of software that demands lots of power. I currently run it on an Intel core i7 975, over clocked and liquid cooled with an Nvidia GTX 295 video card with 12 gigs of ram. Some say overkill, but I get the best performance of any system I have built in the past.

Hey, I forgot to ask. I have not been around a KW in 10 years, is the fire extinguisher really mounted on the door frames now? Maybe just a programers screw up.

Thx

No it isn't, nor do we have a third huge ass MFD in the center of the dash, not yet anyway.

The cockpit looks like the one on the OH-58X variant that was around in the early 90s.

I do remember seeing cockpits in some birds with the third MFD. Maybe someone from the 82nd could confirm this, I believe the birds where there. The third MFD was like the moving map display in the F-18 and even looked like it my have been the same one.

I saw the 58X once while at Bragg, it was on the way to the AAAA convention with the US Army paint job, not the glossy one you see in those pics. the center MFD was there but the cockpit was chuck full of different instrument heads, like the early version of VIXL, head tracking, pilot FLIR etc. Nice setup with seats in the back. Never made it past the technology demonstration. Too heavy. Couldnt get the thing under 5500 pounds with no real ammo, standard crew and a full bag of gas.

Those models are Terrific! The cockpit isnt right but its still looks good!

Maybe we should get FSX to do the modeling for the Army Sims!!!!

The Area 51 website says it is not available yet. Where did you get it?

Ooops! My bad! One of their links is not working.

www.flightsim.com in the pilot shop. Not sure why the Area 51 guys don't have it on their site.

Lighthorse, do you think it is worth the $30? That is a lot of money for not a lot of features or the promise of updates.

Punisher,

The add on is nothing more than a toy. It has no helicopter characteristics, nor does it have any usable instrumentation or equipment. Pure eye candy. Makes for good screen shots and yes it is overpriced for what you get. If you want some suggestions on the best aircraft out there, there are no helicopters in my opinion as FSX is not written well for them. My personal favorites are the Flight1 Cessna 172 for real world flight training, and Level D 767-300ER for the most accurate and well modeled add on aircraft. If you want to learn just what it takes to fly a heavy, you can't beat Level D. I have read an article where an FSX pilot with no real world experience went and rented a $1000 an hour Canada Air 767 simulator after a few years of flying the Level D add on and impressed the shit out of the old fart who at first thought the guy was a nut for even showing up. The Level D has a 90+ % working cockpit, fully functional FMC and flies like a dream, but it's also not cheap. Just my 2 cents.

Nope - nice visuals - but as already mentioned the dynamics are the same as the default Bell...I have the Abacus Chopper Havoc for about 2 years now, maybe three now, and the KW model in there, while not eye candy like this one, the dynamics are better in my opinion.
