Here comes the longest question ever asked on these boards... I am currently on orders to PCS to WOCS/WOFT. I am arriving in Fort Rucker the evening of 5 OCT with a report date of 18 OCT and a class date of 24 OCT. I understand snowbird status. I am prepared financially to be self supporting (i.e. army lodging, rental car, etc..). I will have to find housing for my wife and son prior to starting WOCS as they will be arriving while I am in WOCS. (Wife ETS'ing, can't afford to send our HHG's to Alabama from her Home of Record after she ETS's.... insert story about Army's inability to adhere to JMAC program during transition to Intermediate Brigades here...). I have been authorized by my losing Command 10 days PTDY for house hunting. Is it in my best interests to come to FT Rucker, find a house, then report to HHC on/about 16 OCT, or is it mandatory that I, immediately upon arrival, report to HHC? If the latter is the case, will my new Command allow me to use the PTDY? If anyone is still reading this, any advice would be appreciated? I'll make it either way, but it sure would go a long way towards my / my wife's peace of mind to know. Thanks all.

This would be one of those case by case type of deals. When I was over at HHC a year and a half ago, they were VERY restrictive at HHC.

I am aware that many things have changed with the system since them. You could always give HHC WOCC a call and see what they tell you. You will never know if you don't ask.

With PTDY you never even see your unit until it's over. You get your leave form stamped at the housing office and your ten days start. It simply saves you from an extra ten days of leave, at the end of which you sign into your unit, in this case HHC.

Paraphrase:

Go straight to housing and get your leave form stamped: officially starting your PTDY.

Sign in to HHC on the tenth day (permitting that the tenth day is still before or ON your sign in date!)

Also, you can take your PTDY at any time during your leave. For instance if you wanted to take your ten days and then go right back on leave, you can do that as well. You just have to have the days you want for PTDY annotated in your remarks block of your DA 31.

I hope that helps. Some of the guys that have just gone through it might be able to help you a lot more with the other things! Best of luck, stay focused!!

Always a good idea to get straight from the horses mouth... I was just hoping someone who had been in a similar situation might have some info, particularly on whether or not I am REQUIRED to report to HHC immediately upon arrival to Ft Rucker. Worse come to worse I will call. Thanks.

I went to the housing office on the second floor of BLDG 5700 (The biggest and newest building on Rucker) and signed in there. They then used the second available line on my leave form and signed me out on PTDY. I had no issues with my unit, but I'm assigned down here. You are on a PCS so the process should be the same for you, but If anyone else in flight school has any different info I'd go with that. Also you could probably sign for housing on post during that time as well and have everything squared away when your wife follows. If you want to rent off post we used Realty Executives (334) 347-7334, 1253 Rucker Blvd # D Enterprise, AL We bought but they handle a lot of rentals and are real proactive. If you need any more info let me know.

Actually, the funny thing is...I was going to simply reply to you that if you had a little patience, Mr. Jenkins would respond with what you needed to know! Should have gone with my gut! Looks like his link has everything you need. Again, best of luck.

I think the comanche simulator building is newer the 5700, they call it the general so-and-so building now, I guess Comanche Sim building would just be a little too stupid. Smart of the Army though to get a nice building built before it was canceled so they would have at least something to show for their money. how much does that building cost? 8.1 billion dollars I think it was?

Just wondering if anyone here knows how PTDY and housing at Rucker work for street-to-seat candidates coming through the Warrior Transition Course. I noticed that the posted link to WOCS discusses inter-service transfers but doesn't mention the Soldiers who do not have a losing command. Thank you in advance for your help.

I'm in the same boat- though my ambitious wife initially told me she planned to move her and the little one while I was in WOCS- no go there.

What did you find out?

I'm looking around for the thread. It was something I came across while just reading through the old posts under a thread about something else entirely. Basically what it said was that it is your losing unit that is charged for your PTDY because WOCS doesn't "pay" for that time. Once you get to Bco, after WOCS, they grant you the PTDY on their dime, but obviously you get stuck with the cost of returning home to bring your family because PTDY is local. The Army will pay for your move of HHG and all that, and you should be able to schedule it without having to be there, but you probably agree that it's not very nice to stick a spouse with that right off the bat. My husband is retired Army and I probably still won't make him go it alone with a two year old running around, lol. I did want to caution you against calling Bco unless you are ready to hear them tell you no. While they may be nice folks, you should be ready for them to tell you that you have to wait and just say "roger" and move on. These folks on here who came through Basic, I'm afraid, may be giving you false hope (I know, I know, there's nothing false about hope, right? I suggest you don't mention that to Bco either... I'm sure they could find a way to show you all about false hope if given the proper motivation) about being able to make a special request. They have a process down there, it's just not very transparent for people in our situation looking in from the outside, unfortunately. Seems like they'd have more prior service street-to-seat folks , but we seem to be somewhat rare compared to other types of successful WOFT applicants.

So, let me look around a little more and see if I can find that post from someone far more knowledgeable than me, that outlined how it works for folks like us...

Sorry, I'm not finding it. Like I said in my response in July, it was under some totally unrelated thread I went through while reading the archives and I really can't remember where. It's here though, I swear! Just read every post prior to JUL 08 and I'm sure you'll find it :smoke: Sounded to me, in your other thread, like you had a plan worked out that suited your orders and the information you've been told by MEPS and your recruiter and if it were me, I'd just go with that. It may seem now like a different set up would be easier or cheaper, but this is the Army after all.
