Army Personnel Eligible for Home Copy of Microsoft Office
Jan 31, 2007
BY Margaret McBride

WASHINGTON (Army News Service, Jan. 31, 2007) - All Army Soldiers and civilian personnel are now eligible for a licensed copy of Microsoft Office desktop applications to use on a home computer.

The only cost is for packaging, shipping and program administration. An Army Knowledge Online account is required.

"In an information-based Army, this tremendous benefit helps our personnel be better trained in applications they use daily in units and offices," said Vernon M. Bettencourt Jr., deputy chief information officer for G-6.

Applications include Office for Windows and Mac, Visio, Project and OneNote.

Soldier and civilians will pay approximately $20 for what is typically several hundred dollars, Bettencourt said. The benefit stems from the Army Microsoft Enterprise License Agreement.

For more information, visit the Army Small Computer Program Web site at

This is for real, I just ordered a copy.

Enterprise is the expanded version of 2007 - everything you want in office and a lot you don't.......or at least don't know what it is.

You can install the enterprise on pretty much as many computers as you want. I've had to call and talk to a person once to get a activation code over the phone but other than that I've got it installed on 6 computers between my personal ones to the alienware for Tacops. Takes some getting used to but I love the powerpoint and word 2007

Does anyone actually like the menus on Office 2007?

I do, I think they are more intuitive than the old style. Although, I'll grant you that it took me a few weeks to get used to it.

So open office is essentially a freeware version of all the MS Office standards? Seems like a good thing, has any one tried it, and is it reliable?

Its very reliable, you can import in from MS Office apps or save in a MS Office format. Due to its popularity MS Office now includes a compatibility package that well let you use Open Office formats in MS Office apps.

Here is the latest web address for the Home Use Program.

https:\\chess.army.mil
or
https://ascp.monmouth.army.mil/scp/index.jsp

Office 2007 enterprise is offered among many other programs.
There is a notice on the program that the Army did not re-new the licence and it expires MAY 2009. The notice said that users MAY have to cease using the program or uninstall it because of this.
Bottom line: you have about one month to order a copy for about 20 bucks before they yank this program if the Army does not renew it's licence! I just ordered mine today.

I tried to get the MS office today with the special code and ako address at the Microsoft page and got this error message:

"We're sorry, one or more errors have occured. Please verify your authentication details (Program code and Email address) with your Program Administrator."

Has anyone else seen this?

What am I doing wrong?

More searching and I found this at a microsoft site:

"If you have experienced difficulties in the past week or so accessing the Microsoft Home Use Program order site, please accept our apologies. Microsoft has been experiencing unusually high volumes of traffic to their site with the Army's recent announcement regarding its availability, and there have been periodic outages. Microsoft has a dedicated team working around the clock to resolve these difficulties, and appreciates your patience as they work to resolve them as quickly as possible. Please attempt to reconnect to the site and advise armyhup@microsoft.com if you are still experiencing any challenges."

I kept trying and was successful on the 7th or 8th try.
