E5?
I overheard something from a guy from a CAV unit that I know say that an E4 in his unit got picked up and his COC promoted him to E5 because of it. I guess because you have to be an E5 to get into WOCS? Any clarification on this would help me tons!

You don't get promoted for getting picked up to WOCS! Woc's get paid as for the rate of E-5, but that's not promotion order. Now after you get there and fail out.. you're an e-5, but not the other way. Any commanders out there feel free to correct me if I"m mispoken.

True-ish. You'll be promoted to E5 for WOC school, and as a WOC will receive E5 pay. BUT, I'd go there wearing whatever rank you wore before your packet was accepted. ESPECIALLY if you're a street to seat (High School to Flight School) type. Don't let them catch you wearing your shiny new SGT stripes with only 9 weeks in the Army. Wear what you earned before you got your WOC school promotion orders.

I was college to flight school and within an hour of the graduation ceremony at Basic Training (Ft. Sill), myself and 6 other guys went to a ceremony where the Drill Instructors promoted us from E-4 to E-5 reading our orders and reciting the NCO Creed. We all got our stripes carefully placed on our uniform collars by five Drill Instructors (YA RIGHT!!) After the ceremony each DI took us aside and explained the importance of wearing the stripes even for the short period we did. It is probably one of the most memorable ceremonies I have ever experienced. Oh, and I think I still of the puncture holes.

Well since I work at the center that does alll this I did a little research(called the old man drunk on his cell) and found out the ins/outs. Yes they do promote, but that's to keep the pay etc straight since it won't happen here. So I was in fact mistaken. So be proud of your hard earned stripes and wear them proud upon arrival here. hehe.

A fellow "street-to-seater" that was in my WOCS class had his Sgt stripes sewn on his class-a's presumably after basic... When the time came for us to turn them into alterations for our new stuff, the prior-enlisted guys were absolutely furious, and he was ostracized for the rest of WOCS. They literally called him "Sgt ______" and never let up on him.
In Basic we were told that we'd be formally promoted, but then the company commander "forgot". My DS actually chewed me out for not having e-5 sewn on for the graduation ceremony, and insisted that I'd better be wearing the rank upon reporting to Rucker... Thankfully a classmate beat me there and let me know that wasn't the case. What a cluster****! ![]() |

The order says SGT/E5 with an effective date of ____, what are your questions. I don't hear anyone bitching about having to wearing their W1 bars after six weeks of school.
